How do solar panels work?

How do solar panels work? Solar panels crown rooftops and roadside signs and help keep spacecraft powered. But how do solar panels work? Simply put, a solar panel works by allowing photons, or particles of light, to knock electrons free from atoms, generating a flow of electricity. Solar panels actually comprise many, smaller units called photovoltaic cells — this means they convert sunlight into electricity. Many cells linked together make up a solar panel. Each photovoltaic cell is basically a sandwich made up of two slices of semi-conducting material. To work, photovoltaic cells need to establish an electric field. Much like a magnetic field, which occurs due to opposite poles, an electric field occurs when opposite charges are separated. To get this field, manufacturers "dope" silicon with other materials, giving each slice of the sandwich a positive or negative electrical charge. Specifically, they seed phosphorous into the top layer of silicon, which adds ext...

How is Solar Energy transforming lives of poor & middle class in India?

How is Solar Energy transforming the lives of the poor & middle class in India? The majority of energy resources required for day-to-day operations are limited and irreplaceable. If not monitored or used accurately, the next generation will face an acute energy crisis. As the energy crisis would deepen across the globe, increasing costs and import of conventional resources will not only reflect a bad effect on the economy of a country, it will mostly trickle down to the poor and middle classes of society. Perhaps, one good strategy to optimally utilize energy sources is to harness them at the local level and India has cracked this code.  One of the best and cheapest solution towards “unlimited power” is the Sun which could be harnessed at many levels, from rural to urban.   From Cities to Villages, India’s unlimited Solar Potential  Endowed with vast solar energy potential, India has taken huge strides to expand this energy resource in the urban and rural ...
